Duration: Approximately 1–2 hours
Weather and conditions permitting
For those who want a quieter, more intimate perspective of Antarctica, Swan Hellenic’s kayaking program offers a truly unique way to explore.
If conditions allow, kayaking may be offered up to twice daily in carefully selected, sheltered locations. Safety is always the priority. Each group is accompanied by an experienced kayak guide, with a dedicated safety Zodiac nearby throughout the experience.
Guests prepare in the ship’s Basecamp, where dry suits are provided and fitted prior to departure. A brief mandatory safety session covers procedures, paddling technique, and what to expect. No advanced kayaking experience is required. Double kayaks are used for stability, allowing both first-time and experienced paddlers to participate comfortably.
Once underway, you’ll transfer by Zodiac to a location scouted by the expedition team. From there, you’ll paddle at a relaxed pace along the coastline, weaving quietly among ice formations and exploring sheltered coves.
Kayaking offers a different rhythm than Zodiac cruising. The silence is deeper. The perspective is lower to the water. Wildlife may appear unexpectedly, as the quiet approach can sometimes draw curious seals or seabirds closer than a motorized boat would.
All equipment is provided, including dry suits and dry bags for cameras or phones. Guests wear base and insulation layers beneath the dry suit, which replaces outerwear.
Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, as nature ultimately dictates each experience. Every outing is shaped by weather, ice, and opportunity.
This is not a strenuous activity. The group moves at the pace of the slowest paddler, focusing on scenery, stillness, and observation rather than speed.
For many guests, kayaking becomes one of the most memorable ways to experience Antarctica.
