Progreso is the gateway to the Yucatán Peninsula, a working port town that puts guests within reach of Mérida's colonial charm and some of Mexico's most famous Mayan ruins. It's a quieter, less commercialized stop compared to Cozumel or Cancún, with the real draw being what's inland rather than the port town itself.

• Chichén Itzá: one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the Kukulkán pyramid (El Castillo). It's about a 2 to 2.5 hour drive each way, so this is a full-day commitment best done as a booked excursion.
• Mérida: the Yucatán's colonial capital, roughly 30 to 45 minutes away, known for the Catedral de San Ildefonso (the oldest cathedral in the Americas), colorful markets, and well-preserved 1500s architecture.
• Dzibilchaltún: a closer, less crowded Mayan ruin site with its own cenote for swimming, a good option if Chichén Itzá's travel time is too long for the port window.
• Cenote swimming: several excursions combine ruins with a stop at a freshwater cenote, a dramatic limestone sinkhole with crystal clear water.
• Progreso's Malecón: the beachfront promenade right at the port, lined with restaurants, shops, and bars, an easy option if you'd rather skip a long inland excursion.
• Progreso Beach: calm, walkable beach a short distance from the pier for a lower-key day.

• Chichén Itzá is the marquee excursion here, but it eats most of the day given the drive time. If the ship's port hours are tight, Dzibilchaltún or Mérida are better fits for a shorter visit.
• Independent taxis and tour operators wait right at the pier and tend to be cheaper than ship-booked excursions, though you'll want to agree on price and return time upfront.
• Shops right inside the cruise terminal carry souvenirs and basics if you don't want to venture far.
• This is mainland Mexico, not an island stop, so it's a true passport-and-immigration port. Keep travel documents on hand.
