Reykjavík may be one of Europe's smaller capitals, but it has plenty of personality. Colorful buildings line walkable streets, the waterfront overlooks Faxaflói Bay, and Mt. Esja creates a dramatic backdrop that seems to change with the light and weather.
The city center is compact enough to explore on foot, making Reykjavík a great place to spend a few hours before boarding the ship—or even better, to explore as part of a pre-cruise stay.
One thing you may notice: much of Reykjavík is heated using Iceland's abundant geothermal energy. You might also detect a faint sulfur smell from the hot tap water. That's completely normal in Iceland!
Worth your time:
- Hallgrímskirkja — Reykjavík's iconic church and one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. Head up the tower for sweeping views over the colorful rooftops, mountains, and water.
- The Old Harbor — An easy walk from downtown with seafood restaurants, cafés, galleries, and beautiful waterfront views.
- Laugavegur Street — Reykjavík's main shopping and dining street. It's a great place for coffee, Icelandic wool goods, souvenirs, restaurants, and people-watching.
- The Settlement Exhibition — A fascinating museum built around the archaeological remains of a Viking Age longhouse discovered beneath the city.
- Harpa Concert Hall — Even if you don't attend a performance, the striking glass architecture and waterfront location make it worth a stop while you're exploring.
Good to know: Credit cards are accepted almost everywhere in Iceland, so there's usually little need to carry much Icelandic cash. Reykjavík is easy to explore on foot, but Icelandic weather can change quickly—even in June—so layers and a lightweight waterproof jacket are a good idea.
Kim's pick: Don't make embarkation day your only Iceland experience! If your schedule allows, arrive a few days early. Reykjavík is wonderful, but some of Iceland's most spectacular scenery is outside the city—and after flying all this way, I'd want time to see it before we board Norwegian Getaway.
