Ålesund is genuinely one of Norway's most beautiful small cities—and it has quite a story.

In 1904, a devastating fire destroyed much of the town and left thousands homeless. Ålesund was rebuilt in the Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) style popular at the time, creating the distinctive streetscape you see today—colorful buildings decorated with turrets, spires, ornate gables, and Viking-inspired details.

The city spreads across several islands connected by bridges, so water and mountain views seem to appear around almost every corner. It's a wonderful port for exploring independently without feeling like you need to rush from attraction to attraction.

What to see and do:

• Aksla Viewpoint — Climb the famous 418 steps from the town park to one of the best views in Ålesund. From the top, you'll look down over the colorful city, surrounding islands, mountains, and fjords. Don't want to tackle all those stairs? You can also reach the viewpoint by road.
• Art Nouveau Centre (Jugendstilsenteret) — Learn how Ålesund was rebuilt after the 1904 fire and why its architecture is so distinctive. The museum itself is housed inside a beautifully preserved former pharmacy.
• Brosundet — The picturesque canal running through the heart of Ålesund is lined with historic warehouses that have been transformed into restaurants, cafés, and hotels. It's a great area for a leisurely walk or lunch.
• Atlantic Sea-Park — One of Northern Europe's largest saltwater aquariums, showcasing marine life from the Norwegian coast and Atlantic Ocean. It's located just outside the city center and is a good option if you'd like something beyond sightseeing.
• Explore the Harbor & Town Center — Ålesund is one of those ports where simply wandering is enjoyable. Walk along the waterfront, browse the shops, stop for coffee or seafood, and take in the architecture.

Good to know: We have a wonderfully long port day—10:00 AM until 8:30 PM—so there's no need to rush.

The city center is compact and very walkable, making this an easy port to explore independently. Comfortable shoes are a must, especially if you're planning to climb to Aksla.

Because we're this far north in June, we'll also have very long daylight hours, so even our later departure won't feel much like nighttime!

Kim's take: Aksla Viewpoint. Those 418 steps may not sound very vacation-like 😂, but that view is one of the iconic images of Ålesund. I'd want to get up there, take in the city and fjords from above, and then reward myself with something good to eat back down by the harbor.
