Amsterdam is one of those cities that feels instantly recognizable — narrow canal houses, bicycles everywhere, beautiful bridges, houseboats, cafés, and canals winding through neighborhoods that look like they belong on a postcard.
But there's much more to Amsterdam than its famous scenery. The city has more than 800 years of history and one of Europe's richest collections of art and museums, alongside lively neighborhoods, markets, restaurants, and some wonderfully quirky Dutch culture.
The historic canal belt is at the heart of the experience, and for a first visit, simply wandering the streets and canals is part of the fun.
What to see and do:
- Canal Cruise — One of the best introductions to Amsterdam. Seeing the city from the water gives you an entirely different perspective on its historic canal houses, bridges, houseboats, and neighborhoods.
- Anne Frank House — One of Amsterdam's most meaningful and popular historic sites. If this is important to you, plan ahead — tickets are timed and availability can be difficult.
- Rijksmuseum — The Netherlands' national museum and home to masterpieces by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and other Dutch artists. Even if you're not normally a museum person, this is one of Europe's great collections.
- Jordaan District & Nine Streets — A wonderful area for wandering, with picturesque canals, boutiques, cafés, galleries, and restaurants. This is where I'd go if you want to experience Amsterdam without spending the entire day checking attractions off a list.
- Dam Square — The historic center of the city and home to the Royal Palace and Nieuwe Kerk. It's an easy landmark to include while exploring the center on foot.
- Try the food! — Look for Dutch favorites such as stroopwafels, poffertjes, fries with mayonnaise, bitterballen, local cheeses, and apple pie.
Good to know: Amsterdam is very walkable, but don't underestimate the bicycles! Bike lanes are essentially roads, not extra sidewalk space, and cyclists move quickly. Pay attention before stepping across one.
If there's a particular museum or the Anne Frank House that you absolutely want to visit, reserve it well in advance rather than waiting until you arrive.
