Olden is the Norway you picture when you dream about the fjords — towering mountains, waterfalls, brilliant blue-green water, glaciers, and tiny villages tucked into the landscape.
Located at the end of the Nordfjord, Olden itself is a small village, but it's surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery in western Norway. This is definitely a port where the destination is the landscape, and you'll want to spend your day getting out into it.
One of the area's biggest draws is Briksdal Glacier, an arm of the enormous Jostedalsbreen glacier. Another is nearby Loen, where one of the world's steepest cable cars carries visitors from the edge of the fjord to the top of Mount Hoven — more than 3,300 feet above sea level — in just a few minutes.
What to see and do:
- Briksdal Glacier — One of the most famous attractions in the region. The journey takes you through beautiful valleys and past waterfalls before reaching the area beneath the glacier. You can walk much of the route or choose an excursion that includes a Troll Car for part of the journey.
- Loen Skylift — If panoramic views are your priority, this would be at the top of my list. The cable car climbs from the fjord to Mount Hoven in about five minutes, where you'll have incredible views over Nordfjord, Lake Lovatnet, the surrounding mountains, and Jostedalsbreen National Park.
- Lake Lovatnet — Famous for its striking turquoise-green water surrounded by steep mountains. Scenic tours of the Loen Valley often include the lake, and some excursions combine it with Kjenndal Glacier.
- Olden Village — If you'd rather have a slower day, spend some time exploring the little village, waterfront and surrounding scenery. You don't necessarily need a packed excursion schedule to appreciate this port.
Good to know: Olden is a small port, and the most memorable attractions are outside the village. This is one port where I would recommend planning your day in advance rather than simply walking off the ship and deciding what to do. Popular experiences such as Briksdal Glacier and the Loen Skylift can be very busy when cruise ships are in port.
Kim's pick: If I had to choose just one experience, Loen Skylift would be very hard to pass up. You're coming all this way for the fjords — I want to see them from 3,300 feet up!
