Skagway is history preserved in amber - the downtown district is part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, and it looks almost exactly as it did when 100,000 prospectors flooded through in 1897 looking for a shortcut to the Yukon goldfields. The White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, a narrow-gauge line built during the gold rush, is one of the most spectacular train rides in North America, climbing from sea level to the White Pass summit through scenery that hasn't changed in a century. It's unapologetically touristy in the summer, but the history is real and the landscape is breathtaking.
What we'd suggest: The White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad is the headline experience - book it early. If you'd rather be on foot, the Chilkoot Trail is legendary among serious hikers.
