Alaska's capital city is the one you can't drive to - bounded by mountains and water, it's only reachable by sea or air, which gives it an island-community feeling despite being the seat of state government. The contrasts are part of the charm: floatplanes taking off from the harbor, bears on Admiralty Island, world-class halibut fishing, and a genuinely good restaurant scene. The Mendenhall Glacier is the rare "drive-up glacier" - accessible without a boat or a hike - and the Mt. Roberts Tramway offers some of the best views in Southeast Alaska for minimal effort.
What we'd suggest: Mendenhall Glacier in the morning (go early before the day-trippers arrive), whale watching in Auke Bay in the afternoon, and dinner downtown at one of the spots the locals actually eat at.
