Wrangell is the Alaska that most cruise passengers never see. Off the route of the larger ships, it's one of the oldest communities in Southeast Alaska - the only Alaskan city to have flown Russian, British, and American flags - with a rough-around-the-edges authenticity that's increasingly rare. The Stikine River, North America's largest undammed river, flows nearby and is best explored with a local guide who actually grew up on it. The gift shops and galleries here sell locally made work, not mass-produced souvenirs, which tells you something important about what kind of town this is.
What we'd suggest: A guided Stikine River excursion is the definitive Wrangell experience - it's a genuinely Alaskan way to spend a day. Anan Creek bear viewing (seasonal) is exceptional if the timing lines up.
