Juneau is one of those places that genuinely surprises people. It's the state capital of Alaska... and you can only get here by sea or air. No roads in. That alone tells you something about how wild and untouched this corner of the world still is.
You'll have plenty of time here, and I'd encourage you to use it. Mendenhall Glacier is the crown jewel... a massive, stunning river of ancient ice you can walk right up to. It's one of the most accessible glaciers in Alaska and absolutely worth it, especially if you're bringing kids. Whale watching excursions out of Juneau are exceptional in July. Humpbacks are feeding actively this time of year and sightings are nearly guaranteed.
If you want to stay closer to town, the Mt. Roberts Tramway lifts you above the city for panoramic views that will stop you in your tracks. Downtown has great local seafood, galleries, and enough charm to fill an afternoon easily.
This is a port where you want to have a plan. I'll have excursion recommendations ready so you don't spend your time figuring it out on the dock.
