Ketchikan is colorful, quirky, and completely its own thing. Built along a steep hillside at the edge of the Tongass Narrows, it's the kind of town where floatplanes buzz overhead, fishing boats crowd the harbor, and totem poles stand on nearly every corner. It is genuinely one of the most visually interesting ports in Alaska.
Creek Street is the historic heart of town... a collection of bright wooden buildings built on stilts over a salmon creek. In July the salmon are actually running beneath your feet as you walk the boardwalk. Kids think this is the coolest thing they've ever seen. Honestly, so do adults.
Ketchikan has the world's largest collection of standing totem poles, and the Totem Heritage Center is worth a stop if you're interested in the rich Indigenous history of Southeast Alaska. For something more active, Misty Fiords National Monument is just outside of town and offers some of the most dramatic scenery of the entire trip.
Our time here is shorter than the other ports, so I'd recommend having a plan before you dock. I'll help you make the most of the morning.
