Skagway is unlike anywhere else you'll ever go. Step off the ship and you step directly into the era of the Klondike Gold Rush... the storefronts, the boardwalks, the whole downtown is a living National Historic Park. It's not a recreation. This is the real thing, preserved almost exactly as it was when thousands of fortune-seekers flooded through here in 1897 chasing gold.
With a full day here, you have options. The White Pass & Yukon Route railroad is one of the most spectacular train rides in North America... it climbs through steep mountain passes with views that are genuinely jaw-dropping. Kids love it. Adults are equally speechless. If you've never done it, this is the moment.
You can also explore the historic district on foot... it's compact, walkable, and full of personality. Local shops, gold rush history, and that unmistakable Alaska frontier energy that you can't manufacture anywhere else.
Skagway is one of my favorite ports on this route. Give it the full day it deserves.
