Osaka has a well-earned reputation as Japan's most fun city, and it lives up to it. The locals are famously warm and outgoing. The kind of people who will give you restaurant recommendations before you even finish asking the question. The city runs on good food and good humor, and both are available in abundance.
Dotonbori is the undeniable heartbeat of Osaka: a canal-side strip of neon signs, street food vendors, and restaurants that never seem to close. Takoyaki (octopus balls, better than they sound), okonomiyaki (savory pancakes), and kushikatsu (fried skewers) are the classics — try them all. For a change of pace, Osaka Castle and its surrounding park offer one of the most scenic spots in the city, especially with spring blossoms in full bloom. And if you have any shopping energy left, the underground mall networks beneath the main train stations are a world of their own. Osaka does not do anything halfway.
Head straight to Dotonbori for street food and energy, then make your way to Osaka Castle for the best cherry blossom scenery in the city. If you have time, a quick train to Kyoto (30 minutes) is one of the best day-trip decisions you can make.
