Kochi is the kind of place that reminds you how much of Japan most travelers never get to see. Tucked along the Pacific coast of Shikoku island, it is laid-back, green, and genuinely welcoming with a local pride that is immediately apparent.
Kochi Castle is one of Japan's few original castles, meaning it survived intact without being rebuilt. A rarity that makes a visit feel especially meaningful. The Sunday Market, one of Japan's oldest and longest-running street markets, stretches along the main avenue and is full of local produce, crafts, and snacks worth lingering over. The region is known for its bonito (skipjack tuna), served seared and smoky in a preparation called katsuo no tataki — a dish that is deeply local and absolutely delicious. Kochi is also surrounded by dramatic natural scenery, with rivers, forests, and coastline just a short drive in any direction. It is a slower pace, and that is entirely the point.
Kochi Castle is one of Japan's few original surviving castles and worth every step of the climb. Pair it with a stop at the Saturday Market and order the katsuo no tataki, seared bonito that is as local as it gets.
