Aburatsu is a small port town in Miyazaki Prefecture, on the sun-drenched southeastern coast of Kyushu. It is a genuinely lovely surprise. The pace here is unhurried, the welcome is warm, and the scenery is the kind that makes you want to stay longer than planned.
The star attraction nearby is Aoshima, a tiny island connected to the mainland by a short footbridge and ringed with shallow, striking waters. At low tide, the shoreline reveals a natural phenomenon called Oni no Sentakuita, rows of dramatically eroded rock formations that look almost too geometric to be real. At the island's center sits a colorful Shinto shrine said to bring good luck to couples. A little further along the coast, Obi Castletown offers a beautifully preserved slice of feudal Japan, complete with samurai residences and a castle surrounded by cherry trees that are typically in bloom right around the time of your visit. A spring arrival here is genuinely special.
Make the short trip to Aoshima Island for the dramatic washboard rock formations at low tide and the colorful Shinto shrine at its center. If time allows, Obi Castletown is a beautifully preserved feudal-era village with cherry trees typically in bloom during your visit.
