Busan is South Korea's second city, and it competes with no one. It has its own distinct energy and absolutely no interest in being a smaller version of Seoul. It is a port city with real personality: mountains that tumble down toward the sea, colorful hillside neighborhoods, white-sand beaches, and a food culture built around some of the freshest seafood you will find anywhere.
Jagalchi Fish Market is a must, whether you want to browse or eat (ideally both). The Gamcheon Culture Village, with its stacked pastel houses painted across a hillside, has become iconic for good reason. Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, built right on the cliffs above the water, is one of those places that genuinely earns the word dramatic. And if the legs are willing, the trail up Hwangnyeongsan Mountain rewards with sweeping views over the entire city and coastline. Busan is energetic, delicious, and a little bit unexpected. Exactly what a great port day should be.
Jagalchi Fish Market is a must, especially if you want to eat something straight off the boat. From there, Gamcheon Culture Village is a 20-minute taxi ride and one of the most photographed neighborhoods in Korea for good reason.
