Come aboard your elegant ship in Basel, settle into your stateroom, and relax until your first meal on board. (D)
We are starting in Basel, the "Cultural Gateway" of Switzerland. It’s situated perfectly on the Rhine bend, bordering France and Germany. This is a city that lives outdoors. Since we are sailing in the summer, you’ll see people dining al fresco, swimming in the river, and enjoying open-air concerts. It’s also home to 20-plus GaultMillau or Michelin award-winning restaurants!
In Basel, you must experience its ancient charm: listen to the gentle sound of the water as you cross the Rhine on a non-motorized ferry, explore the Roman ruins of Augusta Raurica, and try a Basler Läckerli. These spiced honey cookies are so iconic that they are still made today in a traditional bakery that dates all the way back to 1753. Don’t miss it!
Note on "Swiss Alps": Though Basel is in Switzerland, it is not located near the Alps. If you want the Alps and the included motorcoach excursion to experience the glacial beauty of Lake Lucerne, that dedicated, full-day experience happens on Day 2. For today, focus on Basel’s unique 'gateway' charm. If you arrive pre-cruise and manage your own schedule, an independent full-day trip to Lake Lucerne is feasible on this day; otherwise, it will be an option for tomorrow.
