This is a classic river cruise "double-dock" day! The AmaVenita will pause in Ludwigshafen in the morning to drop everyone off for their chosen regional excursions. While you are out exploring, the ship glides further down the river to meet you later in the afternoon in the winemaking town of Rüdesheim. It is a seamless way to maximize your time and experience two completely distinct areas of Germany in a single day.

A Brief History

Ludwigshafen serves as your morning gateway to the historic Neckar River Valley and the scenic Castle Road. Just a short drive away lies Heidelberg, Germany's oldest and most legendary university town. Because it escaped heavy bombing during World War II, its romantic, sprawling red sandstone castle ruins and Baroque Old Town remain beautifully intact. Later in the day, you re-embark and cruise into Rüdesheim, a thriving wine-growing center since Roman times. Anchoring the southern entrance to the dramatic UNESCO-listed Rhine Gorge, Rüdesheim is surrounded by ancient, terraced vineyards that have produced world-class Rieslings for centuries.

Visit Heidelberg, the perfectly preserved medieval city nestled in the Neckar River Valley along Germany’s Castle Road. Discover the iconic red sandstone Heidelberg Castle and the famous Great Vat, an 18th-century, 49,000-gallon wine cask built to store tithes from local wine growers.

For a more active adventure while in Heidelberg, join a guided hike up the Philosopher’s Path. This scenic trail on the opposite side of the river was aptly named during the Romantic Period when university scholars and poets walked it for creative inspiration. It offers breathtaking, panoramic views of the castle and Old Town.

Alternatively, you can visit one of Germany’s oldest cities, Speyer. This tour highlights the magnificent Speyer Cathedral—the largest preserved Romanesque cathedral in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site—as well as the imposing medieval Old Gate (Altpörtel).

Hop on a bicycle and pedal along the scenic Neckar River to the picturesque medieval city center of Ladenburg, where you will enjoy some free time to explore the local independent shops and historic architecture.
