Whittier is one of Alaska's genuine oddities - a tiny town of just over 200 people, connected to the outside world by a single tunnel (the longest combined road and rail tunnel in North America) that operates on an alternating schedule. It's not a destination so much as a gateway - to Prince William Sound, to nearby glaciers, to some of the best wildlife viewing in Alaska. Sea otters, puffins, harbor seals, and mountain goats are all reliably present. If you're embarking here, arrive the day before - the logistics require it, and Anchorage (58 miles away) is worth a night of its own.
What we'd suggest: Arrive the day before embarkation. We'll handle the Anchorage hotel and ground transfer - the tunnel schedule is the kind of thing that catches people off guard, and we'd rather you weren't one of them.
