Haines is the rare Alaska port that feels genuinely lived-in - not curated for cruise passengers, but real. Surrounded by the Chilkat Mountains on one side and the longest, deepest fjord in North America on the other, it's a town with a frontier past (gold rush trails, a century-old military fort) and a surprisingly vibrant arts and culture scene rooted in Tlingit heritage. Unlike most Southeast Alaska towns, you can actually drive here - which means fewer ships, fewer crowds, and more of the Alaska that doesn't perform for tourists.
What we'd suggest: A visit to the Alaska Indian Arts Center at Fort Seward for genuine Tlingit culture, followed by time on the waterfront watching the mountains do what they do.
