Nanaimo is Vancouver Island's second city - unpretentious, genuinely welcoming, and underrated in the way that places are when they sit in the shadow of somewhere more famous. The waterfront is walkable and lovely, the Old City Quarter has a good concentration of independent shops and restaurants, and the surrounding landscape - forested mountains meeting the Strait of Georgia - is quietly spectacular. If you know about Nanaimo bars (the chocolate-custard-coconut confection that bears the city's name), this is where to eat one from the source.
What we'd suggest: Walk the waterfront, explore the Old City Quarter, and eat a Nanaimo bar somewhere with a view. Low-key and completely worth the time.
