Sitka has a layered history that most Alaska ports don't - it was the capital of Russian America before the United States purchased Alaska in 1867, and that colonial past is visible everywhere, from the onion-domed St. Michael's Cathedral to the Russian Bishop's House. The Sitka National Historical Park, where towering totem poles line a forest trail along the waterfront, is one of the most peaceful and culturally significant walks in Southeast Alaska. The town itself is small, walkable, and genuinely charming - one of those rare ports where you'd happily have stayed longer.
What we'd suggest: The Sitka National Historical Park trail is the centerpiece - budget at least two hours. St. Michael's Cathedral is worth a look, and the local seafood (particularly the salmon) is exceptional.
