Klawock is the kind of place that rewards the traveler who's paying attention. Located on Prince of Wales Island - the third-largest island in the United States, largely unknown outside Alaska - it's home to the largest collection of authentic totem poles in the state, each one a carved record of Tlingit family history and cultural identity. This isn't a museum. These poles stand in the open air of Klawock Totem Park, exactly where they belong, in a community that's still very much alive with the culture that created them.
What we'd suggest: Klawock Totem Park is the main event - give it more time than you think you need. This is living history, not a photo opportunity.
