The largest tidewater glacier in North America doesn't need much introduction - but no description prepares you for the reality of it. Standing on deck as the ship moves into position, the ice face fills your entire field of vision: 76 feet tall at the waterline, six miles wide, actively calving into the sea with sounds like cannon fire. This is one of the rare moments on any Alaska itinerary where the ship itself is the best vantage point. No excursion required. Just show up and let it be enormous.
What we'd suggest: Position yourself on deck early. Bring layers - it's colder than you expect near the ice. And give yourself permission to just stand there.
