City/Region Overview
Naples (Napoli) is Italy's third-largest city and one of the oldest continuously inhabited urban centers in the world, founded by Greek settlers around 700 B.C. and later absorbed into the Roman Empire. Set on the spectacular Bay of Naples with Mount Vesuvius rising dramatically to the east, this chaotic, beautiful, and fiercely proud city is one of Italy's most authentic and culturally rich destinations. Its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the entire Campania region it anchors is one of the Mediterranean's most historically layered landscapes. Naples is also the jumping-off point for Pompeii, Herculaneum, and the Amalfi Coast — making it one of the most excursion-rich ports on our voyage.
Port & City Relationship
- The Celebrity Ascent docks at the Port of Naples (Stazione Marittima) — a working port berth with no tender required
- The cruise terminal is approximately a 15–20 minute walk or 5-minute taxi ride from Naples' historic city center
- The archaeological sites of Pompeii (our group's destination today) are approximately 25–30 km from the port — roughly 45–60 minutes by road or train
- The port area itself is busy and best navigated with your group; stay together on the embarkation pier

Getting Around
- Circumvesuviana Train (Naples Garibaldi → Pompei Scavi): The most convenient way to reach Pompeii independently; approx. €3.50 [~$4 USD] per person each way; journey 40 minutes; trains run frequently
