Mykonos is, quite simply, one of the most iconic islands on earth. Perched in the heart of the Cyclades archipelago in the Aegean Sea, this small but magnetic island has drawn visitors for decades with its extraordinary beauty: gleaming whitewashed buildings tumbling down rocky hillsides, brilliant blue domes piercing a flawless sky, and the silhouettes of ancient windmills turning slowly on the hilltops. The island's compact capital, Mykonos Town (also called Hora), is a masterpiece of traditional Cycladic architecture — its narrow, deliberately winding lanes (designed historically to confuse pirates and deflect wind) are lined with bougainvillea, boutiques, and charming chapels. Despite its reputation, Mykonos at its heart is a place of timeless Mediterranean beauty, and our September visit comes after the peak summer crowds have thinned — a wonderful time to experience it.
