Today we journey inland to one of antiquity's most haunting and awe-inspiring sites: ancient Pompeii. Dating almost to the very time of Paul — who himself visited the nearby port of Puteoli (modern-day Pozzuoli) during his voyage to Rome — Pompeii offers a vivid, tangible window into the world the Apostle inhabited. When Mount Vesuvius erupted catastrophically in A.D. 79, it buried this thriving Roman city in volcanic ash, preserving it in extraordinary detail for nearly two millennia.

Faith Connection
Paul knew this coastline well. He landed at nearby Puteoli, the chief port of Rome, and was welcomed by Christian brothers who urged him to stay seven days.
