Piraeus — Gateway to Athens, the Acropolis & Ancient Corinth
City/Region Overview
Piraeus is the chief port of Athens and one of the busiest passenger ports in the world — a modern, working harbor city that serves as the maritime gateway to Greece's extraordinary capital. Though Piraeus itself has its own character — lively fish tavernas, a bustling waterfront, and the excellent Archaeological Museum of Piraeus — most visitors rightly use it as the springboard for Athens, just 12 km (7.5 miles) to the northeast. Athens is one of humanity's greatest cities: the birthplace of democracy, philosophy, theater, and the Olympic Games, home to the Acropolis and the Parthenon, and — for our group — the city where the Apostle Paul stood on Mars Hill (the Areopagus) and proclaimed the Gospel to the philosophers of the ancient world. Today we also visit Corinth, where Paul founded one of the early church's most significant congregations.

- The Celebrity Ascent docks at Piraeus Cruise Terminal (Mega Port) — a dedicated, well-equipped cruise berth; no tender required
- Athens city center (Syntagma Square) is approximately 12 km from the port — 30–45 minutes by Metro or 30–60 minutes by taxi depending on traffic

Getting Around
- Metro Line 1 (Green Line, Piraeus → Monastiraki/Omonia): Most direct route to central Athens and walking distance to the Acropolis; €1.40 [~$1.55 USD] per journey; runs every 5–10 min; journey approx. 20–25 min

- ⚠️ Important: The Acropolis site has no shade — hats, sunscreen, and water are essential. Wear flat, non-slip shoes; the marble walkways are polished and can be very slippery. Photography is permitted throughout the site.
