City/Region Overview
Soúda Bay is one of the largest and most naturally sheltered deep-water harbors in the entire Mediterranean — a stunning fjord-like inlet on the northwestern coast of Crete, Greece's largest island. The port serves the city of Chania (pronounced Hahn-yah), the island's second-largest city and one of the most beautiful in all of Greece. Crete itself is a place of extraordinary depth: the birthplace of the Minoan civilization (Europe's earliest advanced culture, flourishing from around 2700 B.C.), a crossroads of every great Mediterranean power — Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans — and a landscape of dramatic gorges, crystalline sea caves, and rugged mountain ranges. Chania's Old Town, with its Venetian harbor, lighthouse, and layered architecture, is among the most evocative urban landscapes in the Mediterranean world.
