Kusadasi — Gateway to Ephesus & the Seven Churches of Revelation
City/Region Overview
Kusadasi (Ku-sha-da-suh, meaning "Bird Island") is a lively resort town on Turkey's Aegean coast, in the ancient region of Ionia. While the town itself offers a pleasant waterfront promenade, a lively bazaar, and beautiful beaches, its true significance lies in what surrounds it: ancient Ephesus, one of the most spectacular and important archaeological sites in the entire world. Ephesus was the leading city of Roman Asia and one of the Seven Churches of Revelation; its extraordinarily preserved ruins make it Europe's most complete surviving classical metropolis. For followers of the Apostle Paul, this is hallowed ground — Paul lived and ministered in Ephesus for more than two years (Acts 19), and his letter to the Ephesians endures as one of his most beloved. The surrounding region also includes the traditional site of the House of the Virgin Mary, numerous Byzantine and Seljuk-era monuments, and one of the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Getting Around

- Minibus/Dolmuş (port → Ephesus/Selçuk): Shared minibuses depart from the town center; approx. ₺50–80 [~$1.50–2.25 USD] per person; journey 30–40 min
- Walking (port → Kusadasi bazaar): 5 minutes on foot
- ⚠️ Important: Turkey uses the Turkish Lira (₺); USD is widely accepted in tourist areas but you'll get better value exchanging currency. Modest dress is required at the House of the Virgin Mary and inside mosques — shoulders and knees covered. Comfortable, flat shoes are essential for Ephesus's marble streets.
